Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce Hosts Record-Breaking City Update
Terre Haute, Ind. - Hundreds of local business and community leaders gathered at the Terre Haute Convention Center on Friday morning for the annual Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce City Update. This year marked Mayor Brandon Sakbun’s second update about the city’s progress and vision for the future.
Mayor Sakbun highlighted the positive momentum in our community by showcasing key impactful projects from various city government departments.
One major milestone was the 2024 innkeeper’s tax revenue, which reached the highest annual total in Vigo County’s history - an impressive 6.83% increase over 2023. Additionally, gaming revenue played a crucial role in strengthening the city’s financial position, allowing the repayment of $1 million in debt incurred prior to 2023. Moving forward, these funds will support transformative projects such as the Deming Park Pool, the YMCA renovations, paving projects, parks equipment and operational equipment.
Terre Haute Transit system has seen ridership increase by 52.5% since implementing fare-free bus services. This increase offers the community better access to necessary services and resources.
Meanwhile, major park improvements are underway, including the Rea Park Clubhouse Renovation, a new Herz-Rose Park Community Center and Splash Pad.
Another exciting development is the city’s implementation of the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) ordinance, passed by the Terre Haute City Council in December 2024. The city plans to submit its application to the state by the end of the month, bringing new opportunities for business and entertainment.
“This event is an incredible opportunity for the business community and municipal government to align their efforts,” said Kristin Craig, President/CEO of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. “When we work together toward a common goal, we position our community for long-term success.”
With over 320 attendees, this year’s City Update saw its largest audience in history - a testament to the growing interest and investment in Terre Haute’s future. The event would not have been possible without the support of sponsors, including this year’s title sponsor, Garmong Construction.
